Fintech and the Growth of the Nigerian Financial Sector

This study was undertaken in order to analyze the effect of financial technology on growth of the Nigerian financial sector. Central Bank of Nigeria Statistical Bulletin (2009-2024)- Time series data the dependent variable was financial sector growth and the independent variables of financial technology were measured in monetary values as the ATMs, POS, Web Payment transactions, Mobile Payment transactions Electronic Fund Transfer. Data analyses were conducted with the use of Ordinary Least Squares (OLS). The analysis component comprised the R-square, adjusted R square, Durbin-Watson, probability value and regression coefficient of financial sector growth over financial technology as well as F-statistic and probability values. During the study, it was found that variation in financial technology variables explained 64.9% of the total variability of growth for the financial sector. Another finding of the study was that relationships Automated Teller Machine transactions and financial sector growth were negative but insignificant; Point of Sale transactions positively but insignificantly with financial sector growth. Web Payment transactions had a positive but not significant impact on financial sector growth as well. Mobile Payment transactions have a negative and significant effect; Electronic Fund Transfer has a positive and significant impact on the growth of financial sector. Conclusion and policy: Given the result presented above, in this study, we find that financial technology drives the expansion of the Nigerian financial system. The study recommended the implementation of policies preventive to the utilization and modernization of financial technology in commerce and financial transactions. To reinvigorate banking sector deepening, strengthen financial dissemination and promote financial inclusion, Central Bank of Nigeria should stimulate innovation in the space of Fintech. The sufficient evidence also called for a disaggregated evaluation of the independent impacts of each fintech measure on private sector credit in Nigeria. It also advised broadening the availability and accessibility of Automated Teller Machines so that they are widely used and assist in the expansion and deepening of the financial sector.
