The Illusionary Jade Body from an Intertextual Perspective: Dialogue with The Folk Narrative of Mi Chau - Trong Thuy or The Tale of The Magic Crossbow

The Illusionary Jade Body (Ngoc than huyen hoa) is a truyen ki (legendary fiction) work dating from the Nguyen dynasty or later, recounting the afterlife journey of Mi Chau with various miraculous and fantastical details. From an intertextual perspective, this paper places the work in a dialogue with the folk narrative Mi Chau – Trong Thuy or the Tale of the Magic Crossbow to clarify how a familiar narrative memory is received, transposed, and recreated in a new text. Based on intertextual theory, combined with interdisciplinary, comparative, and poetics methods, along with analytical, contrastive, and demonstrative operations, the paper focuses on examining the dialogue between the two texts across two dimensions: content and form. The research results indicate that The Illusionary Jade Body not only continues the story after Mi Chau’s tragic death but also reconstructs the character image, shifts the right of speech, re-signifies the “jade” symbol, and reorganizes the narrative model. Consequently, the new text absorbs the old memory while opening up a new field of meaning, calling for a different reading of Mi Chau and her destiny.
