Afghanistan is a large country situated at the crossroads of South and Central Asia and the Middle East. The country has been ravaged by foreign invasions and internal conflicts over the last 5 decades that led to internal and external displacement of the Afghan population. Besides, like most areas, specialized care in Gastroenterology also suffered a major setback in the country as a result. The Afghan population is faced with significant burden of both communicable and non-communicable Gastrointestinal and liver diseases, which makes access to affordable and quality Gastroenterology and specialized endoscopy services for the Afghan people much needed. Afghan Gastroenterologists should now focus on regional collaboration to revitalize Gastroenterology in the country.
