Digital Communication and Employee Engagement of Commercial Banks in Rivers State
This study investigated the relationship between digital communication and employee engagement in commercial banks in Rivers State, Nigeria. The study specifically examined how dimensions of digital communication—namely collaboration, file sharing, and project management—relate to employee engagement, measured in terms of innovation and quality service delivery. A descriptive research design was adopted, and data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, including mean and standard deviation. The population of the study consisted of 3,318 employees drawn from the regional offices of selected commercial banks, from which a sample size of 357 respondents was determined using the Taro Yamane formula. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire administered to the respondents. The findings revealed mean scores of 4.13 for collaboration, 4.16 for file sharing, 4.18 for project management, 4.19 for innovation, and 4.18 for quality service delivery, indicating a high level of agreement among respondents. The results further showed a positive and significant relationship between employee collaboration and innovation, as well as between collaboration and quality service delivery. Significant relationships were also found between file sharing and innovation, and between file sharing and quality service delivery. In addition, project management was found to have a significant relationship with innovation; however, no significant relationship was observed between project management and quality service delivery in commercial banks in Rivers State. Based on these findings, the study concludes that effective digital communication enhances employee engagement in commercial banks. It is therefore recommended that commercial banks invest in advanced digital communication technologies and provide adequate training to employees to maximize their effective utilization, improve service delivery, enhance customer experience, and strengthen employee engagement in an increasingly competitive banking environment.
