GEOGRAPHICAL INDICATIONS IN SPIRITS: A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS BETWEEN CACHAÇA (BRAZIL) AND TEQUILA (MEXICO)

Geographical Indications (GIs) are strategic instruments for territorial valorization, product differentiation, and yhe promotion of regional development. This study aims to comparatively analyze the application of GIs to cachaça (Brazil) and tequila (Mexico), considering institutional, productive, historical, and marketing aspects. The methodology is based on qualitative research of a descriptive and analytical nature, supported by bibliographic and documentary surveys. The results show that Mexico has a consolidated and export-oriented model, whereas Brazil has an expanding system with a strong focus on regional development. It is concluded that, although both beverages have significant potential for value addition through GIs, cachaça still requires more robust internationalization strategies.
