Significance of Discourse Markers in Selected Texts of theNovel “Wuthering Heights”: A Discourse Analysis
The concept of a discourse marker (henceforth, DM), which can be seen as both a stylistic and a discoursal phenomena, is the focus of the current study. Conjuncts have seven roles, according to Quirk et al. (1985). The DM role is one of these roles. The study’s gap is that readers have trouble in understanding some literary works in general and the novel “Wuthering Heights” in particular. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate how DMs improve character relationships, make the narrative structure clearer and eventually add to the emotional depth of the novel. It is assumed that certain readers have trouble or misunderstand certain direct messages in the concerned novel. The data analysis is restricted to examining seven texts from the “Wuthering Heights” novel. The current study’s model will be based on Sayidina (2010). It has been noted that in order to avoid misunderstandings, readers must comprehend the precise meanings of DMs within the context of literary works.
