Prevalence And Contributory Factors to Denque Fever Among Residents in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State

This study examined the prevalence and contributory factors of dengue fever among residents of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area in Rivers State. The study was guided by five objectives, five research questions, and four hypotheses. A descriptive survey design was employed, with a population of 237,647 residents. A sample of 438 participants was selected using a multi-stage sampling procedure. Data were collected using a structured proforma titled Prevalence of Dengue Fever and Contributory Factors Proforma (PDeF-CFP) and analyzed using percentages and biserial correlation at a 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that the prevalence of dengue fever was very low (3.2%). Statistically significant relationships were observed between dengue fever and awareness (N = 411, r = 0.62, p = 0.01), access to healthcare services (N = 411, r = 0.62, p = 0.01), socio-economic status (N = 411, r = 0.85, p = 0.00), and mosquito control practices (N = 411, r = 0.77, p = 0.00). The study concluded that the prevalence of dengue fever among residents of Obio/Akpor LGA was low, and that awareness, access to healthcare, socio-economic status, and mosquito control practices significantly contributed to the occurrence of the disease.

It was recommended that the Government should work in synergy with the ministry of health for a continuous prevention of dengue fever in Obio/Akpor. The healthcare workers should integrate counseling and dengue awareness into routine healthcare visits, this can health to equip the residents with the need information.
