An Article on Security Threats Associated with the Nigeria–Benin Borders (1999–2020)
This article examines the border security relationship between Nigeria and Benin Republic from 1999 to 2020, with a focus on the challenges, opportunities, and future directions of their bilateral relations. The purpose of this study is to investigate the dynamics of Nigeria – Benin Republic border security relations, identify the key issues affecting their cooperation, and explore potential areas for improvement. The study is anchored on the Independence theory, which posits that states prioritize their sovereignty and independence in their interactions with other states. This theoretical framework is relevant to understanding the dynamics of Nigeria-Benin Republic relations, particularly in the context of their shared border and economic ties. The study employs a qualitative research methodology, utilizing a combination of primary and secondary sources, including official documents, academic literature, and expert interviews. The data collected is analyzed using thematic analysis, which enables the identification of patterns and themes in the relationship between Nigeria and Benin Republic. The findings of this study reveal that Nigeria-Benin Republic relations are characterized by a mix of cooperation and challenges. While the two countries have made efforts to strengthen their economic and security cooperation, their relationship is also marked by issues such as border porosity, smuggling, and human trafficking. The study also finds that Benin’s economic dependence on Nigeria is a significant factor in their relationship, with Benin’s economy heavily reliant on Nigeria’s market. This study submits that the economic dependence of Benin Republic on Nigerian Trade through Seme border has led to tension and unilateral actions to control border crimes, also the colonial legacy having contributed to the challenges and misunderstanding through border porosity and lack of effective management created by artificial border. The study recommends that both countries prioritize collective responsibility and shared efforts to address the security concerns and economic issues affecting their relationship. It also suggests that revising the borderline to define boundaries and prevent trespassing is crucial, as well as launching programs to reduce poverty among border communities. Furthermore, the study recommends that both countries enhance their diplomatic relations by implementing bilateral agreements and treaties effectively.
