Community involvement has emerged as a fundamental concept in sustainable rural development within developing countries, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. The primary objective of this study is to examine the nature and extent of community participation and evaluate its overall influence on social development outcomes across rural areas of Nigeria.

This research utilizes a descriptive survey research design. The research will take place in selected rural communities within Nigeria. The study’s population will consist of adult residents from the selected rural communities who are 18 years of age or older. This population will include both male and female residents, community leaders, members of community development associations, youth representatives, women’s groups, religious organizations, and other residents who possess knowledge or experience related to community development activities. The sample size will be calculated using an appropriate statistical method. When the population is known, the Taro Yamane formula will be applied: This research examined the role of Community Participation and its impact on Social Development in Nigeria’s rural regions. The empirical literature and theoretical evaluations indicate that the top-down, centralized development strategies employed by successive administrations have predominantly failed to achieve sustainable transformation in rural areas. In light of the findings and conclusions drawn from this study, the following actionable recommendations are presented: Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and non-governmental bodies should implement tailored capacity-building programs for rural community leaders and Community leadership structures and development project committees must establish enforceable quotas for women, youth, and persons with disabilities.
