Green Entrepreneurship and the Circular Economy: A New Framework for Sustainable Business Development
This article examines green entrepreneurship and the circular economy as an integrated pathway for sustainable business development. It argues that growing environmental challenges, including resource depletion, waste generation, pollution, and inefficient production systems, can be transformed into entrepreneurial opportunities through innovation and sustainable business practices. The article explores how green entrepreneurship provides the entrepreneurial mechanism for identifying environmental opportunities, while circular economy principles provide a framework for reducing resource consumption, extending product lifecycles, recovering materials, and eliminating waste. Drawing on the Natural Resource-Based View, Stakeholder Theory, and Dynamic Capabilities Theory, the article develops a conceptual framework linking green opportunity recognition, green innovation, circular resource management, circular business-model innovation, stakeholder collaboration, sustainable value creation, and business resilience. The discussion demonstrates that green innovation serves as a critical bridge between environmental challenges and commercially viable circular solutions, while stakeholder collaboration, supportive institutions, finance, technology, and infrastructure create the enabling conditions for implementation. The article further identifies major barriers, including limited access to finance, technological constraints, inadequate infrastructure, fragmented supply chains, regulatory uncertainty, and consumer resistance. It argues that overcoming these barriers requires coordinated action among entrepreneurs, businesses, governments, financial institutions, consumers, and other stakeholders. The article concludes that integrating green entrepreneurship with circular economy principles can help enterprises create economic, environmental, and social value while strengthening long-term competitiveness and resilience. The proposed framework provides a practical conceptual foundation for advancing sustainable business development in emerging and developing economies.
