The Study of Synonyms and Homonyms in English and Albanian Languages
The study of synonyms and homonyms is an essential part of learning English as a foreign language, as these lexical phenomena contribute significantly to vocabulary development and effective communication. The English language is characterized by a rich and dynamic vocabulary, where a single idea can often be expressed through different words and expressions. Likewise, the Albanian language possesses a considerable number of synonyms and homonyms that enrich its lexical system and facilitate precise and stylistically appropriate communication. Therefore, understanding the meaning, function, and correct usage of these lexical units is important for both native and non-native speakers of English and Albanian. Considering the morphological productivity and the constantly evolving nature of both languages, synonymy and homonymy represent important linguistic features that influence the referential and stylistic functions of language. A broad vocabulary, together with the ability to distinguish between words with similar or identical forms but different meanings, reflects a high level of language competence and contributes to more accurate communication, translation, and interpretation. This study focuses on the comparison of synonyms and homonyms in English and Albanian through a contrastive approach. It examines their definitions, classifications, characteristics, and practical usage, highlighting both similarities and differences between the two languages. The findings indicate that although English and Albanian share common lexical features, they also demonstrate language-specific characteristics in the formation and use of synonyms and homonyms. Consequently, the study emphasizes the importance of these lexical phenomena in vocabulary enrichment, language learning, and the development of communicative competence.
